Driving Innovation in the Era of Advanced Materials

From the Stone Age to the digital age, human progress has been defined by materials. Today, materials science is at the forefront of technological innovation, powering breakthroughs in quantum computing, artificial intelligence, energy storage, and next-generation semiconductors. According to McKinsey & Company, the global materials industry has grown by over $2.4 trillion (40%) between 2020 and 2023, emphasizing its critical role in shaping the future.

At CUHK, the undergraduate program in Materials Science and Engineering (MASE) is designed to equip students with cutting-edge knowledge, hands-on experience, and interdisciplinary expertise. Our graduates will be ready to lead in industries such as advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, AI-driven materials design, and beyond.

Programme Features

World’s top Materials Engineering Faculty

CUHK is one of the leading institutions in Asia in materials-related research. The Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science host >30 professors working on various aspects of materials. Many of our materials faculty members are well accomplished, with recognition ranging from Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers, Xplorer Prize, Changjiang (Yangtze River) Scholar, Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry, US National Academy of Engineering, and many more. They have been creating a significant impact on materials innovation and applications.

Flexible and Forward Looking Curriculum

20+ elective courses from multiple disciplines across 4 different departments from both Engineering and Science Faculty: available for building a flexible curriculum tailored to students’ career-development objectives. Our electives cover wide-range of topics from Biomaterials, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials Manufacturing (3D printing), Solid State Materials, Solar Energy Materials, Energy Storage, Flexible Wearable Materials, Quantum Materials, to Artificial Intelligence driven Materials Design. Beyond theory, students will also experience hands-on experimental course on materials laboratory.

Compulsory Internship and Industry Relevant Career

Compulsory internship is a unique feature of our MASE program, with the goal of equipping students with career-ready skills, exposures, and connections. During the final year, students can opt of local or overseas internship, with minimum duration of 8 weeks, up to 12 months work-study program by the faculty. For those adventurous spirits who prefer more immersive experriences, Co-op@CUHK provides a 6-8 month valuable paid work experience overseas, which is the first of its kind in Hong Kong.

Compulsory Internship and Industry Relevant Career

Final year students will undergo a 6-unit 2-semester final year research project course available under the supervision of a faculty member in the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science. High-performing students will also get the opportunity to do summer research under the guidance and mentorship of materials expert in the program. In addition, each student will be assigned academic mentor to enhances students’ practical knowledge and communication skills. This will not only strengthen students’ abilities but also inspires their insight on future career development.
